Evolution

The evolution of a drawing…and a thought.

There are plenty of times I want to make something, but can’t think of what to draw, so I pick up whatever is around, make some marks, and listen.

On this day I colored on four small pieces of paper. While three stayed silent, one clearly had something to say. Can you see the beginning of the conversation (picture #2)? The black line on the right looked to me to be a pair of glasses on someone’s nose. When I outlined the yellow area and saw the bottom lip jutting out it reminded me of something…a certain fish.

If you have been following along, you may have seen my sardines Morning Glory several weeks ago. I drew a lot of fish after that, and they didn’t lead to anything at the time. Now though, one with a certain underbite was ready to be seen. I ripped it from my sketchbook, pasted it on, and called it done. Or, at least the visual part was done.

Why does this picture, and the way it unfolded, appeal to me so much? Maybe it’s the thought of swimming freely through life. Maybe it’s the feeling of being not so different from other living creatures. Maybe I just needed a little more humor on that day. Maybe we will have another discussion and something else will emerge.

P.S. The other three (picture #3) aren’t speaking yet.
