“Everyman is me,
I am his brother.
No man is my enemy.
I am Everyman
and he is in and of me.
This is my faith,
my strength,
my deepest hope,
And my only belief.”
- Kenneth Patchen, Wonderings
Kenneth Patchen was a mostly self-taught writer and artist known for his faith in love, but also his anger at the injustices of the world. He published more than 40 books of poetry and created what became known as Painted Poems, or Picture Poems, which consisted of his made-up creatures combined with his handwritten thoughts.
First image is me, trying my hand at creating something using Patchen as an inspiration.
Second is the cover of What Shall We Do Without Us, a book showcasing some of his work.
I hope you enjoy him, and his thoughts on our shared humanity, as much as I do.
